Hiding Tells
Posted in Poker on 01/13/2014 10:21 pm by ShelbyDo you ever receive that itch? The itch to wager, to head to the closest gambling den, to come across a great stakes casino game of Texas holdem, to sit at a Black jack table for hours on end. I like that itch. And I like to scratch it.
I also really like to watch people wager. No two poker faces seem identical. When I gamble I like to consider I put on a poker face that is impassable. Except I know I have particular actions. For 1, the only time I smoke cigarettes is when I wager on poker or Pontoon. And then I smoke. Except I smoke no matter if I am winning or losing, regardless of whether I have a beneficial hand or bad.
I once bet within a weekly poker game. The casino game was constantly five card draw. There was a person who bet with us each week who usually wore a hat. When he was given a beneficial hand, unconsciously, he would begin touching and wagering with his hat. Needless to say, he by no means won.
The very best poker player I ever saw was a man who made much more movements and gestures at a poker table than anyone I had ever met. He was impeccable in the way he dressed. Often an high priced suit and tie, shoes shined and nails manicured. He was meticulous in this manner. And he was often brushing his pants or holding his hands or stacking his chips in tidy little piles.
I use to analyze him for hours. I would tried to see if I could spot his tell. Choosing fuzz off his jacket- did this imply he was bluffing? Arranging his chips in a very short pile – did this mean he had a beneficial hand?
Several years later I bumped into him in the bar in Chicago, il and we had a drink. I asked him if he were aware of all those actions he produced or if they have been unconscious. He informed me that each individual thing he did at a poker table was intentional. He said that everybody is constantly checking out everyone else’s poker face. They are trying to spot the the tell.
So his technique was to provide them lots to assume about. His reasoning was if they were thinking about him selecting a piece of lint off his jacket and what it meant they positive weren’t pondering about their cards.
His technique was distraction. And it worked for him. Never give up a system that works for you.
