Howard Lederer grew up in a family of 5 where he enjoyed gambling on various card games when he was young. With their assistance, Howard Lederer would tweak his logical thinking abilities. Howard used these strategic ideas in the game of NL Texas Holdem.

Howard also helped his sibling Annie Duke master poker. Annie was a superb student of the game as she constantly asked questions about the right way to make the proper decision. Howard Lederer told Annie to head out to Sin City and compete in the World Series of Poker competition. She is one of the best women players the poker arena has ever seen. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and competed in cash games for the successive decade. When the WPT grew in popularity, Howard made the decision to play more tournaments.
